HMC Stands With Seafarers After Myanmar Earthquake

Updated:April 10, 2025

In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity and support, Huayang Maritime Center has extended financial aid to Myanmar seafarers whose homes were damaged during the powerful earthquake that struck Mandalay and Sagaing regions on March 28, 2025.

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake caused significant damage across central Myanmar, including residential quarters belonging to active seafarers onboard HMC-managed vessels. Among 200 onboard seafarers, total of four onboard seafarers’ homes were reported to be affected by the quake. Meanwhile, the homes of 317 of our on-leave crew members were reported to be undamaged. However, we have not yet been able to establish contact with approximately 50 on-leave crew members.

Under the arrangement of HMC, Huayang Myanmar company provided direct financial assistance of MMK 20 lakh per home to the affected seafarers and their families. The support is intended to aid immediate relief efforts, provide temporary shelter, and facilitate necessary home repairs.

In addition to the direct donations, HMC contributed to the Lighthouse Myanmar Maritime Charity Group, a well-respected local nonprofit actively involved in earthquake relief operations. The donation will be used to provide food, medical aid, and long-term recovery assistance to impacted communities in Mandalay and Sagaing.

“We are deeply saddened by the destruction caused by the recent earthquake,” a spokesperson for Huayang Myanmar Company said. “Our seafarers are the backbone of our operations. This is not just a corporate donation — it’s a family helping its own.”

The company emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting the well-being of its crew members both onboard and onshore, pledging to continue monitoring the recovery and provide additional assistance if necessary.

The donations have been warmly welcomed by the seafarer community and relief workers alike, who praised HMC’s quick response and meaningful support during a time of crisis.

As rebuilding efforts begin in the affected regions, the contributions from HMC serve as a beacon of hope that unity and compassion remain at the heart of Myanmar’s maritime industry.
